Author Belinda Letts (Wedding Belle).
This blog is in honour of my Pa. However useful for any Brisbane Lions, Fitzroy Bears or sport fans with a poem to read at their funeral for any loved ones looking down on us. Recently and suddenly my Pa – Leon Cottom passed away on the 03/09/2020. As we are based in Melbourne, we are in the middle of stage 4 restrictions with covid-19. Regretfully we were only allowed 10 people at the funeral and not allowed a wake/celebration of life. Although this in itself is devastating, we still wanted to do the funeral right.
My Pa was a simple man, he loved football (his Brisbane Lions / Fitzroy Football Club) and his family. I love readings and words and I could not find any readings that felt relevant to his life. I searched “Non-Religious Funeral Readings”, “Typical Aussie Guy Funeral Readings”, “Sport Funeral Readings” and “Football Readings” – nothing, nothing, nothing. Then finally I came across A Funeral Poem “For A True Blue (My Everton Heaven)” from a supporter who wrote a Poem about a soccer club overseas and he said ‘feel free to moderate it if you think there’s a more appropriate place for it’.
So, I changed it and wrote this for my Grandpa, in honour of Leon Cottom who absolutely adored his 83 years on earth and absolutely loved his Brisbane Lions / Fitzroy. I love you Pa.
A POEM FOR PA
Lift your head, please no more tears,
And think of all those happy years.
I’m in a place that I’m content,
To my Fitzroy heaven, I’ve been sent.
Where Lions fans live on forever,
Loyal and true, we’re all together.
And in my heaven with my crew,
I wear a smile and think of you.
Every game that Brisbane Lions play,
These fans are with them all the way.
Cheering on from high above,
For the boys in maroon, blue and gold, the team we love.
So live your life and please don’t dwell,
And be at peace, I’m safe and well. I’m stilling comfy in my chair, With a milky way & VB, the perfect pair.
But for now I say, Bye Love I’ll see you one day, up above. With friends in maroon, gold & blue,
In my Lions heaven, I wait for you.
I am not a funeral celebrant, so I debated sharing this on my website. I was proud I could sting together some words that better represented our Pa. I ended up sharing because I hope this poem brings happiness to another Lions fan / Fitzroy supporter. I hope these are the words you have been searching for. I hope that this brings a smile to another family’s face and for anyone that knew my Pa and couldn’t be with us at the service, I hope this brings you a smile. Please get in touch if this poem helped your family too.
I cannot take all the credit, and wish I could credit the original Author, but here is the original poem “A True Blue (My Everton Heaven)” who shared a Poem about his UK Everton Football Club.
